What is Epoxy Adhesive?

Epoxy adhesive is a thermoset polymer plastic material with an extremely strong, durable and flexible structure that can withstand environmental conditions. Epoxy adhesives basically consist of epoxy resin and hardener. During the application, the components enter into a chemical reaction and form the desired structure. In this way, epoxy adhesives provide versatile application opportunities in different areas. In addition, it allows high tensile and impact strength material connections and is ideal for maintenance-repair-process processes.

Epoxy adhesives are used on a wide variety of materials. Its most distinctive features are fast drying and strong adhesion to many materials. Some of the performance features include high chemical and heat resistance, excellent adhesion and water resistance, as well as high mechanical and electrical insulation. In addition, epoxy adhesives can be used for sealing, coating and filling purposes.

Epoxy Adhesive Types

Epoxy adhesives, which are widely used, are available in the market as one-component and two-component.

Single Component Epoxy Adhesives

Single component epoxy adhesives are generally high strength. It is a product with excellent adhesion to metals and environmental and chemical resistance.

Single-component systems are formulated with pre-catalysis and require only moderate heat to cure. Curing speed is faster than two-component systems. Stocking and storage times are very limited.

Two Component Epoxy Adhesives

Two-component epoxy adhesives differ in that catalysis occurs at ambient temperatures and can be accelerated by heat. Baking also promotes additional crosslinking resulting in superior properties. Two-component systems are suitable for bonding most surfaces. They are considered highly stable due to their ability to withstand a constant weight or force over a long period of time, as well as their resistance to physical and chemical influences. Stock and storage times are quite long.

Usage Areas of Epoxy Adhesives

Epoxy adhesives are versatile and have different applications in many industries. They provide a variety of uses, from simple maintenance-repair works to mass production applications in many areas. It is used extensively in areas such as defense industry, aviation, electronics and marine.

How to Apply Epoxy Adhesive?

Before using the epoxy adhesive, you can ensure that you use it correctly by following the steps below.

  • Make sure you use the most suitable epoxy for the environment you will be using.
  • The application surface should not be wet or damp. Make sure that the surface is dry after cleaning it from oil and dust.
  • In order for the adhesive to adhere well to the surface, apply at the appropriate level to the surface to be applied.
  • Carefully read the instructions for use on the two-component (two-component) epoxy adhesive. It is important that you adhere to the size given. Otherwise, curing may not occur, and even if it does, it may not provide sufficient strength and cause leakage.
  • It should not be subjected to the strength test before the full curing period is completed.
  • Avoid contact with the adhesive with hands. You can use a spatula, scraper or special tools.

When choosing epoxy adhesive and its type, the mass, type of the material to be adhered, and the ambient temperature to be adhered should be adjusted.
