What is Cyanoacrylate?
What is Cyanoacrylate? This chemical, which many of us think we have not heard before, is commonly called Japanese Adhesive in Turkish. Therefore, this adhesive, which is thought to be a Japanese invention, was originally developed by the American Dr. It was discovered by W. Coover in 1942.
What is its Chemical Content?
In the structure of cyanoacrylate adhesives, there are cyano group (-CN) and ester group (COOR) attached to the same carbon atom, which have the ability to withdraw electrons. Thanks to these properties, the monomers reacting with electron-rich substances polymerize in a very short time with the humidity in the environment and a hard polymeric layer is formed between the two surfaces. This layer ensures that the parts are firmly attached to each other. It is generally preferred because it can bond a wide variety of materials together with its instant adhesion feature.
“What is Cyanoacrylate?” If we look at the question with a wide framework, cyanoacrylate adhesive; It is a type of adhesive with high heat resistance, which cures in a short time like 2-50 seconds, does not contain solvent (solvent), provides adhesion with a small amount by penetrating even small spaces with its structures generally having low viscosities. It usually takes 5-24 hours for cyanoacrylate adhesives to have full strength. In industrial use, Cyanoacrylate is often abbreviated as CA.
Where to use?
Depending on the area of use, cyanoacrylate adhesives come in liquid, gel and spray forms. Although the usage areas vary, it can be used for bonding porous and non-porous surfaces such as metal, plastic (PVC, ABS, polystyrene, polystyrene), wood, ceramic, china, porcelain, leather, rubber, cork, cardboard.
Cyanoacrylate adhesives show very good resistance to non-polar solvents such as ether and motor oil. However, it shows low resistance against strong polar solvents such as acetone, acid, caustic, acetic. Therefore, the surface and ambient conditions to be applied are important to ensure a quality bonding.
Cyanoacrylate adhesives are also among tissue adhesives. It is also frequently used in medicine and dentistry, and some special types are used for seamless treatment by applying on cut wounds in emergency situations. Its use in the medical field is increasing day by day.
