Importance of Machinery and Machinery Parts Shipment

During the domestic and international shipment of machinery and machine parts in all industries, corrosion problems occur especially due to humidity in the air, temperature changes and the type of metal used. For this reason, machinery and parts must be protected very meticulously during shipment processes. While there are many forms of this protection, the safest ones (as they completely cut off contact with air) are anti-corrosion lubricants, varnishes and removable coatings.

It is one of the most common mistakes to try to protect the products by packing them with nylon and its derivatives in maritime transportation. Every particle that will remain inside during packaging (no matter how deflated) will be sufficient to initiate the corrosion process due to factors originating from heat exchange, even in air and land transportation. For this reason, corrosion formation should be controlled and losses due to corrosion should be reduced as much as possible.

Unfortunately, it is perceived as a cost by businesses, and because of the use of wrong, cheap and not fully protected products for these transactions, larger problems and costs await businesses.

What is Corrosion?

Corrosion; Metals lose their metallic properties by entering into chemical or electrochemical reactions with the environment they are in. Most of the metals are not resistant to the effects of water and atmosphere, and they corrode even under normal conditions.

The phenomenon of corrosion manifests itself in every part of the industry. However, its effects and financial losses as a result of corrosion can be minimized by taking precautionary measures. These measures, which seem to increase the investment cost, ensure that the product is economical in the long run, as it prolongs the life of the product and reduces maintenance periods.

If we define it for the industry, Corrosion; It is the most important indicator that determines the importance of the measures that should be taken by the enterprises due to the economic losses caused indirectly.

How Does Corrosion Occur?

  • Since the first point where metals encounter corrosive effects (contact with water, heat exchange, wrong chemical applications, steam, etc.) is their outer surface, the material is corroded from the surface.
  • One of the alloys used during production may corrode and the entire material may become unusable even though the other alloy is not damaged.
  • Rust is more common at points such as screws, welding, rivets. The reason for this is that the oxide environment is formed more easily at the junction points and the properties of the junction points change during the welding process.

Corrosion is a dynamic cycle process and therefore metal materials can be exposed to corrosive effects in any environment.

If we look at the types of corrosion that we will encounter during the transportation of remanufactured machinery and parts;

  • Corrosion caused by sea water, in environments open to the atmosphere; Sea water, which has a very high conductivity, and the humid environment it causes create a highly corrosive environment for the metallic structures it comes into contact with. Especially iron and mild steel corrode rapidly in these environments. There is no other component that will cause corrosion in the clean atmosphere composition except water vapor. In cases where the humidity is higher than 70%, a thin liquid film layer is formed on the metal surface as a result of the condensation that occurs due to the temperature difference between day and night; when it is lower, this liquid layer is not seen. Liquid water can be found in very thin capillary spaces. If solid particles with capillary properties such as dust and dirt are present on the metal surface, condensation of water vapor and rapid progression of corrosion are inevitable.
  • Corrosion caused by the effect of temperature; The temperature has a great effect on the corrosion phenomenon depending on the residence time of the liquid film formed on the surface of the metal that we have just mentioned. As long as the temperature is low, drying on the metal surface is delayed and corrosion continues.
  • Corrosion caused by precipitation and wind; It is an important factor affecting machine parts both in sea transportation and in land transportation. The frequency and drying time are as important factors as the amount of precipitation. Therefore, the wind speed and direction in the region should also be considered during the transportation process. As the wind accelerates drying, it also causes the dirt and dust collected on the surface to drift away. These factors give information, albeit partial, about the corrosion rate in any region.

How Do We As Pulsar Kimya Help With The Protection Of Machinery And Machinery Parts For Shipment?

It is vital that manufacturers ensure that the workpieces they produce reach their customers without being exposed to corrosion during the long and harsh climate conditions as well as the risk of damage during loading and unloading.
As we mentioned before, when the relative humidity of 70% is exceeded, the corrosion formation that occurs at a serious level accelerates with dirty, oily surfaces, salt content in the environment and fingerprints; Even in a completely deaerated packaging, these factors will be enough to initiate rusting. Even the best packaging system needs to be supported with an extra preservative (lubricant, varnish, removable and reusable coatings that prevent contact with air and moisture) due to careless packaging. The purpose here is to ensure that the chemical material used adheres to the metal and forms a protective layer. The most important and simple rule to get maximum performance from this protective layer is to apply a good cleaning process without even fingerprints on the surface. Within all these precautions, the cleaning process is also very easy when the product is applied to the material and the transportation process is completed. Just like the chemicals we protect the machine parts, it should be noted that the chemicals we need to use for cleaning are new generation products that are sensitive to human and environmental health.

Choosing and applying the right product to the right spot after cleaning is also an important criterion. Using even the best anti-corrosive chemical product in the wrong place will result in unsuccessful results. For this reason, the machine and machine parts to be transported in the right product selection;

  • Time to be protected (until, during and after shipping)
  • Type of storage, (container, wooden crate, etc.)
  • The type of protection that should be preferred according to the material type and transportation method of the product, (oil, varnish, coating, etc.)
  • The issues of cleaning the protection on the machine and machine parts should be taken into account.

After determining the parameters we have mentioned above;

  • Surface cleaning with our new generation, anti-corrosive water-based or solvent-based cleaners that are harmless to human and environmental health,
  •  As the PULSAR KIMYA family, we contribute to the smooth completion of your domestic and international transports in choosing the appropriate one among our lubricants, varnish coatings and reusable coatings that provide excellent adhesion to the surface according to the storage method and material type of your products.
