What is Cleaner? What are the types of cleaners?
Cleaners are used for the cleaning of the mechanical equipment in all industries and carry and are an important part of the maintenance & repair process. These products carry a grave importance for the protection, cleaning and maintaining the functionality of the parts. Using the appropriate cleaning & disinfection chemicals helps to increase the service life of equipment used in industries.
Industrial cleaners, which are divided into two different groups as water-based and solvent-based, are often used to remove oil, grease and dirt from and sometimes to clean the residues formed as a result of process in the systems.
Water-Based Cleaners
What is a water-based cleaner?
As their name suggests, water based cleaners use water as the primary solvent. Water-based chemical cleaners remove contaminants not only by dissolving them, but also by chemically reacting with the contaminants and making them more easily soluble in water. In high-precision applications where water-based chemicals are used and residues are not tolerated, rinsing process is usually required at the end of the cleaning process.
How to use water-based cleaners? What are its usage areas?
Water-based cleaners are first diluted with water, then applied to the surface and finally rinsed off. On the other hand, some water-based cleaners have corrosion preventing properties, hence rinsing stage is not performed during the cleaning process where products with corrosion preventing properties are used.
Water-based cleaners are generally used for the cleaning of mechanical parts, machines, hand tools and the workshop in industries. Additionally, they can be used in washing machines.
Solvent-Based Cleaners
What is a solvent-based cleaner?
Solvent-based cleaners are cleaners that are created by the combination of different chemicals to dissolve or dilute oils, greases and dirt. Thanks to their fast evaporating property, solvent-based cleaners dissolves grease and dirt quickly. This way, oils and dirt are then quickly washed away from the surface without the need for long preparation times, processing times or drying times.
Solvent-based cleaners are widely used in industrial areas due to their powerful cleaning properties. They are available in fast or slow evaporating, odorous or odourless, flammable or non-flammable types. On another note, some solvent-based cleaners contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which can harm human health and the environment.
How to use solvent based cleaners? What are its usage areas?
Unlike water-based cleaners, solvent-based cleaners cannot be used in every sector. Solvent-based cleaners can be used in parts washing machines where methods such as dipping, wiping, spraying and brushing are used.
Due to the properties of solvent-based products, fires that may occur during the use of these products cannot be easily extinguished. Therefore, care should be taken to ensure that the products to be selected are high-safety products with non-flammable properties. In addition, prolonged inhalation, ingestion even skin contact with solvent-based cleaners will harm human health. Therefore, for the occupational health and safety reasons, extreme attention should be paid to the use of solvent-based cleaners and necessary precautions such as wearing protecting gloves and masks should be taken before the use of these products.
